Timothy Hommowun is a New York-based woodwind doubler currently located in Fort George (upper Manhattan). Tim toured for two seasons with the global production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music (Broadway Asia), playing oboe & clarinet for over 300 performances of the classic musical all over Asia. He has also played oboe for Journey LIVE with American Composers Orchestra, performing Austin Wintory's score to the beloved videogame live to gameplay with the composer conducting. Tim is a regular member of Hell's Kitchen Laboratory Orchestra (HKLO), a group of professional artists who get together to read, gain experience, and have fun playing their secondary instruments. He has also performed frequently with the Eastern Wind Symphony, including their performance at the 2021 Midwest Clinic in Chicago.
Originally from the suburbs of Chicago, Tim is a graduate of New York University – Steinhardt (MM woodwind studies) and the Eastman School of Music (BM oboe performance). While at NYU, Tim taught as a graduate adjunct instructor of woodwinds, working with a sizeable studio of non-major oboists, saxophonists, and clarinetists. Founding oboist of Fifth Element Winds, he also coached chamber music for NYU’s Summer Woodwind Intensive. While on tour, Tim gave a masterclass in partnership with the Manila Symphony Orchestra to oboists of the Philippines. Tim’s teachers have included Richard Killmer, Humbert Lucarelli, Pavel Vinnitsky, Timothy Reudeman, Geoffrey Burgess, and Deb Stevenson, and he has performed in masterclasses with artists including Sherry Sylar, Philippe Tondre, Christoph Hartmann, Lino Gomez, Frank Morelli, and Harry White. While in school, Tim also studied conducting with Ted Sperling, Mark Scatterday, Mark Powell, and Brad Lubman.
During the Covid-19 global pandemic, Tim was a member of Coin Op. Studios, a group that specialized in producing remote-recorded albums of video game music arrangements. Shortly after graduating Eastman, Tim was asked back to perform the premiere of Mark Scatterday’s wind transcription of Roberto Sierra’s Poema y Danza for 2 oboes & strings with fellow Eastman oboist Shannon Prescott and the Eastman Wind Orchestra. Tim has also performed with artists such as Leonard Slatkin, Hila Plitmann, David Zinman, Joshua Bell, the Canadian Brass, and Blue Man Group in venues such as Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium, Symphony Center's Orchestra Hall, Millennium Park's Jay Pritzker Pavilion, Ravinia, Kodak Hall at Eastman Theater, and Severance Hall.
In addition to his performing & teaching activities, Tim is an avid arranger, and his solo recitals always include an original arrangement or composition. Combining that with his love of the rarely-heard bass oboe, many of Tim's early arrangements were written to give himself excuses to play that instrument as much as possible, and he plans to commission works throughout his career to bring more attention to it. Tim's other favorite activities include playing video games, watching tv & movies (mostly anime), and snuggling with his cats & guinea pigs.
